4 long years have passed since Eric Garner died after being put in a chokehold by an NYPD officer in Staten Island when stopped for selling loose cigarettes. His eleven shouts of "I Can't Breath!" became a rallying cry for Black Live Matters and police reform protests around the country. This week family members, advocates, and elected officials gathered at City Hall to demand that disciplinary hearings for officers involved in Garner's death begin now without delay. They also want to ensure that NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo who put Garner in the deadly chokehold and other officers involved don't get to resign with “good guy letters.”
Speakers include Gwen Carr, Yul-San Liem with the Justice Committee, NYC Council Speaker Cory Johnson. New York City Public Advocate Tish James, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer. Minister and President of Brooklyn Chapter of the National Action Network Kirsten John Foy, Staten Island Councilmember Debbie Rose, Queens Councilmember Donovan Richards and Brooklyn Councilmember Inez Barron.
